Career Searching: Finding The Right Job For You

In a person’s life, there are many “firsts”.  Your first words.  Your first steps.  Your first day at school.  Your first date.  Your first car.  And as you approach graduation, there’s another “first” each person should consider—your first job.   While many people don’t give a lot of serious thought to the career they want to delve into, it’s an important decision.  Searching at the right time and knowing the resources within your reach is the key to finding a successful job.

When Should I Begin Looking?

Some students in high school think they can wait until their senior year in high school before they have to worry about their careers.  What they may not realize is that in most schools, a person can earn college credits while still in high school.  Often known as dual enrollment classes, the classes are often advanced level classes (such as Advanced English, Advanced Calculus, etc.).  Also, the earlier you take the SAT, the more opportunities you will have to change your score by retaking it if you do poorly.

What Resources Are Available?

A guidance counselor can help students decide what path they want to go.  They have resources to help you take inventory on what you need to do (SAT, financial aid, college admissions and testing, etc.).  The college world is constantly changing and coming up with new rules, criteria, and so on.  A guidance counselor will likely be up to date on a lot of this.  Also, there are web sites out there designed to help you determine your interests and select a suitable profession.  Whether you’ve always dreamed of being a teacher, a nurse, or an astronaut, these sites can help you decide if that’s a good match for you.  They can provide the motivation needed to encourage you to pursue your dreams.

But let’s say college isn’t for you…then what?  Well there are plenty of jobs out there with a good salary that don’t require a college education.  You may decide to become a salesman, an auto mechanic, or a factory worker (welding, manufacturing, etc.).  Maybe you want to be a professional ball player.

Final Thoughts

Whatever career you choose, you need to begin searching early on and give yourself time to decide if that’s what you really want to do.  Remember, you want to find a job that you enjoy and you can look forward to each morning.  Don’t settle for a job you consider dead-end or with a menial salary.  Shoot for the stars!  A wise man once said, “If you aim at nothing, you will probably hit it.”
